Silimakuta refers to a grouping of villages in the Lake Toba region of Sumatra. Silimakuta means “the five villages,” and refers to the five clan families that make up the community. At SCAA this year, we had the privilage to meet Leo, an Indonesian farmer and the man behind the Tiga Raja mill. The mill is based in the Simalungun region and collects coffee from a variety of small producers in the highlands of Northern Sumatra. Keffa (our importer) is proud to be partnering with the Tiga Raja mill to bring Leo’s incredible fully washed, triple hand sorted coffee to North America. Keffa and Leo have worked extensively in the local communities to build trust and increase the quality of life through the production of the mill, which provides vital jobs and empowers the coffee growing community in Simalungun through fair wages and education.
